Microsoft MDS – ‘Anonymous’ Authentication on IIS

Posted by Diego em Abril 27, 2013

So, this kept me busy for a few hours.

My MDM application was “working fine” except for the fact that it was showing this error when navigating to the Explorer area:

As most of the errors on MDS, this was not very intuitive, so I checked the events log and found this:

The exception message is: Security settings for this service require ‘Anonymous’ Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service..

System.NotSupportedException: Security settings for this service require ‘Anonymous’ Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service.

I checked my MDM app and indeed, the anonymous authentication was off, so I set it to on. However, it caused the Master Data Manager to stop functioning, showing "Unauthorized" every time I tried to access it.

After a lot of goggling I found out that yes, the MDS web site should have Windows Authentication enabled and Anonymous Authentication disabled, BUT the “Service” folder under the MDS website should have “Anonymous Authentication” enabled:
